Belt Reinforcement — Kevlar, Vectran, Steel
What is belt reinforcement—Kevlar®, Vectran, or steel?
Belt reinforcement consists of strength-bearing cords built into a timing belt to help it carry tension and transmit power reliably. Chemi-Flex offers different cord constructions so the belt can be matched to the application: Kevlar® for strength, Vectran for high strength relative to weight, and steel for high-tension, heavy-duty duty cycles. The key differentiator is a choice of reinforcement engineered around the required load and belt construction, rather than one cord type for every job.
What are reinforced belts used for?
Reinforced timing belts are useful wherever a machine needs dependable, synchronized motion under load. Examples include packaging and conveying systems that repeatedly move products, robotics and automation equipment that coordinates moving axes, 3D printers that depend on consistent positioning, and heavy-duty industrial drives with higher belt tensions. The appropriate Kevlar®, Vectran, or steel construction depends on the machine’s loads, speed, pulley geometry, and operating environment; these examples are application categories, not a claim that every reinforcement type suits every machine.

Kevlar® Belts
We manufacture Kevlar® timing belts that incorporate this strength and reinforcement to make the most durable timing belts available. Kevlar® is used to support suspension bridges, which is a good testimony to the strength of this material and what you can expect from our Kevlar® timing belts. Chemi-Flex has many different constructions of reinforcement cords to meet exact customer needs.

Polyester Reinforcement Cords
High Tensile Strength: Polyester fibers have excellent tensile strength, making them capable of withstanding the forces exerted on timing belts during operation. This strength ensures that the belt can transmit power efficiently without stretching or elongating excessively.

Vectran Reinforcement Cords
High Strength: Vectran fibers are known for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. They have higher tensile strength than steel and are among the strongest synthetic fibers available. This strength allows Vectran reinforcement cords to withstand high loads and tensions, making them suitable for demanding applications.

Steel Reinforcement Cords
High Tensile Strength: Steel cords provide exceptional tensile strength, making them capable of withstanding high loads and tensions encountered in heavy-duty applications. This strength ensures that the timing belt can transmit power efficiently without stretching or breaking under stress.
Customization: Steel reinforcement cords can be incorporated into timing belt designs with various configurations and arrangements to meet specific application requirements. This allows for the customization of belt construction to optimize performance and durability in different operating conditions.

Nomex Cords
Nomex® cords are valued for their heat and flame resistance, low thermal shrinkage, and resistance to many chemicals. As belt reinforcement, they can be useful where elevated temperatures make material stability important, although the performance of a finished belt depends on its complete construction and operating conditions.
